MADISON (WKOW) — A Madison brew pub may be the first of its kind to offer CBD-infused beer, cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages. The Great Dane Pub & Brewing Company, in partnership with Madison-based GreenRX, will serve multiple house-infused CBD cocktails at all locations next week.
Legislation made these types of concoctions legal. Governor Scott Walker signed the industrial hemp bill in November of 2017. It allows Wisconsin farmers to grow it and it passed the legislature unanimously.Â
State Senator Patrick Testin (R – Stevens Point) was the author of the bill and helped launched the pilot program. He said as long as CBD is derived from the program, and contains less than .03% of THC, it’s legal to use it in drink form.
“This is going to open up a lot of doors, not just for the textile industry, but to see innovation,” said Testin. “To see it in the craft beer industry is really exciting.”
Eliot Butler is the co-founder and president of the Great Dane and said he’s looking forward to bring something new to the capital city.
“I’m hopeful the community will see the benefits of CBD oil and give them a chance to try them without purchasing a whole bottle,” said Butler.
CBD is believed to provide relief from pain, anxiety and a number of other physical and mental issues. Butler said studies show it’s safe to mix with alcohol and drinking one or two could help you save some money.Â
“It might make you drink a little bit less and it might make you relaxed so you might decide you had enough,” he said.
Sen. Testin said it’s possible the 2018 Farm Bill could help regulate CBD even more by removing it from the controlled substance list which can help clear up those who may think it’s dangerous.
Another author of CBD oil legislation was State Senator Van Wanggard (R – Racine). In 2017, Gov. Walker signed off on his bill to allow people to possess CBD oil without fear of prosecution. Wanggard’s office said there’s still a lot of confusion around CBD oil on who can grow and sell and is looking to clarify the current law through legislation next year.
The Great Dane and GreenRX  will host a launch party from 4:30 p.m.  to 6 p.m., Dec. 13 at the Dane’s downtown location, 123 E. Doty St., Madison. The event will feature drink specials for Green Glory and several CBD-infused cocktails.
